Settling Mars is not a single leap but a sequence of hard problems, each of which must be solved before the next one matters. Getting people there alive is only the beginning. They must land safely, shelter from radiation, produce breathable air and water, grow food, generate power, and maintain their bodies and minds through years of isolation on a world that is actively trying to kill them. The roadmap below breaks that challenge into its essential phases.

The early steps are matters of survival engineering. Colonists will depend on oxygen pulled from the atmosphere, water extracted from ice, and habitats shielded against a radiation environment with no magnetic field to soften it. Food will come from pressurized greenhouses, not open fields. Every system must be as close to self-sustaining as possible, because resupply from Earth is 26 months and hundreds of millions of kilometers away.

But a colony is more than life support. The later phases raise questions no engineering diagram can answer: who governs a settlement that Earth cannot reach in real time? What laws apply when someone is born, breaks the rules, or dies? How does a community stay sane, find meaning, and build a culture of its own? These questions — of identity, governance, and daily human life on another world — are as central to colonization as any rocket. The steps below move from the physical to the profoundly human.
