Mars Missions

Every spacecraft humanity has sent to Mars — from Mariner 4 to Perseverance.

The exploration of Mars is one of the great sustained campaigns in the history of science — a sixty-year relay of spacecraft, each building on the last. It began in failure and near-misses: of the earliest missions launched toward Mars, most were lost. But in 1965 Mariner 4 slipped past the planet and returned 21 grainy photographs that shattered centuries of speculation about canals and civilizations, revealing instead a cratered, seemingly dead world.

Everything since has been an argument with that first impression. The Viking landers searched for life in 1976. Global Surveyor and Odyssey mapped the planet from orbit. The rovers — Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance — turned Mars from a place we photographed into a place we drive across, drill into, and sample. Along the way, Perseverance confirmed an ancient lake in Jezero Crater, and the Ingenuity helicopter proved powered flight is possible in Martian air.

Each mission below represents years of engineering against brutal odds: the punishing distance, the communication delay, the thin atmosphere that makes landing so dangerous that engineers call the final descent the "seven minutes of terror." Together they form a chronological record of how humanity learned to reach, orbit, land on, and roam another planet — the essential groundwork for the day we finally send people.
