Mangalyaan

Mangalyaan, formally the Mars Orbiter Mission, announced India's arrival as a major spacefaring nation. Launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation in November 2013, it reached Mars in September 2014 and made history on two fronts: India became the first Asian nation to reach Mars, and the first country anywhere to succeed in its very first attempt at the planet.

The mission was celebrated worldwide for its remarkable cost-efficiency. Built and flown on a budget far smaller than comparable missions from other space agencies, Mangalyaan demonstrated that meaningful interplanetary science did not require enormous expense, an achievement that reshaped global perceptions of what was possible in planetary exploration. It reached Mars using a clever fuel-saving trajectory, gradually raising its orbit around Earth before slinging itself toward the Red Planet.

Once in orbit, Mangalyaan carried a compact suite of instruments to study the Martian surface, atmosphere, and the behavior of the planet's thin envelope of gas. Its color camera returned striking full-disk images of Mars that were widely shared, offering global views of the planet that few missions in close orbit could capture. Designed for a mission of six months, the orbiter operated for years beyond its planned lifetime, standing as a landmark of both scientific capability and engineering economy.
